To me, it shows the most important part about evangelism is not forcing a person to make a decision for Christ. Only God can do that. Yet we can say to others and show others what God is really about, what mercy and love truly look like.
I think in some ways, too, the man with the Bible is at the heart of emerging Christianity. We do what Christ tells us to do and invite others to follow without forcing them to do so.
Todd, awesome clip!!! David, I couldn't agree more. And then, I am left to wonder about how you (David) said "Yet we often hesitate to invite..." and am curious as to what some of the possibilities are as to why we may, or do, hesitate to share our faith with others.
I know that for me, I used to be hesitant as I didn't think that my own experience of the Christain faith was very authentic, or vibrant for that matter. I'm glad to say that that has changed for me. With the fairly new (emerging) perspective I now have (actually, several years old now) of how important it is that each individual understand how it is that their faith, as a follower of Jesus, is valid for them in a specific way that speaks to them, I can share Jesus afresh with others and emphatically desire to do so and respect the freedom of the one I am sharing my faith with in hopes that they may come to experience, in a tangible way, the Reality I have come to enjoy and revere.
I think there is much to be said for respecting others' journies in life and seeing to it that we, as followers of Jesus, don't attempt to steal away the room they need in their own spiritual pursuits the all-important medium of self-discovery, that they may come to "own" for themselves the authentic life-experience they seek.
It's pretty powerful to hear an atheist ask how much you have to hate someone to not share something that you believe will give them eternal life! His practical suggestions are very revealing as well. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it!
